Having a tough time figuring out how the face ID on iPhone works? Fret not! You have arrived at the right place. Read this article to learn how to set up face ID on iPhone.
Face ID has been a major player in the tech market since its inception. Providing an extra step of security in a large part of the electronic ecosystem.
With a glimpse of the user’s (owner) face, the facial-recognition system maps out the features of the face. And with the help of the sensor on the device sends an authentication signal to unlock the gadget.
Similarly, I was also quite intrigued with face ID and its function when I got my iPhone 13 and wanted to set it up. So, I’ve mentioned a few important points that I discovered for myself while setting up face ID on my iPhone 13.
Note: Although, I have used an iPhone 13, I don’t see any reason why you can’t follow the same steps on your iPhone 14.
Earlier on, I spoke about Efficient Ways to Set and Reset Keyboard on iPhone and How to Block and Unblock Contacts on iPhone as well.

How to Set Up Face ID Through iPhone Profile
As exciting as the Face ID features are, so is the set up. It just takes a few minutes to set your facial features for Face ID on iPhone. The latest tech with the sensor and face mapping algorithm has made it super easy for the people in general. So, let’s dive into the article.
Note: Here, my iPhone iOS system sent me a notification to set up Face ID. So, I’ll be showing how I did it.
- Open Settings on your iPhone.
- On the next page, the message Finish Setting up Your iPhone appears. Click on it.
- Now, tap on Set Up Face ID on the new page.
- Then iPhone asks to Enter your passcode.
- Again, click on Continue to further create Face ID.
- Tap on Get Started.
- A window appears to check if our face fits into the square box on the screen.
- If we don’t position our face properly within the square on the iPhone screen it won’t move to the next screen. So, try to place your face correctly.
- Once the face is positioned accurately, it moves to the next page to scan our face via camera.
- Further, follow the instructions and rotate the face from left to right and up and down.
- A green circle will form around the face on the screen once the scanning is complete.
- Moving on, two options are provided which are:
- Use Face ID with a Mask – This feature will only scan the facial features around the eyes. So, it might not be the best choice to go with.
- Don’t Use Face ID with a Mask – On the other hand, if this is chosen then the entire face is scanned for authentication and unlocking the iPhone.
- Another tip is Use Partial Circle in iPhone which can also be enabled to scan partial features to unlock the iPhone.
- Finally, click on Done after the Face ID set up finishes.
Thereafter, you have the Face ID set up on your iPhone. Also, we can always choose to set up the Face ID later in iPhone Settings.

Conversely, let’s see another way to set up Face ID. This can be done whenever the user wants to set up the Face ID.
- Open Settings > Face ID and Passcode.
- iPhone will ask to Enter your passcode at this point.
- Scroll down and tap on Set Up Face ID.
- Next, click on Get Started.
- Again, place the face inside the frame on the iPhone screen.
- Use Face ID with a Mask – If you enable this tab then it will start scanning the face again following the similar steps. This feature will only scan the facial features around the eyes. So, it might not be the best choice to go with in terms of security. We can also enable this from the main settings shown in the image below.
- Don’t Use Face ID with a Mask – On the other hand, if this is chosen then the entire face is scanned for authentication and unlocking the iPhone.
- Finally, your Face ID set up on iPhone is complete.
- Set Up an Alternative Appearance – Additionally, we can also add a separate member’s Face ID by clicking on this option. It will follow the same previous steps to add on another Face ID on iPhone.
This feature comes handy when two people use the same iPhone and can unlock the iPhone with their respective faces.

Can We Delete/Reset our Face ID on iPhone
Of course, we can! That too very easily. On days we want to remove our Face ID from our iPhones. Sometimes, the facial features aren’t always unique and so the iPhone facial recognition system can mistake another person as you and unlock the device which can be a breach of security.
So, in such cases, it’s preferable to delete the Face ID. Otherwise, we can also delete it if we only want to use fingerprint and passcode to unlock our iPhone.
- Open Settings > Face ID & Passcode.
- Now, iPhone will ask to Enter your passcode for security purpose.
- Scroll down and click on Reset Face ID.
- The Face ID data will be deleted/reset immediately on your iPhone.
Hence, after this we won’t be able to unlock our iPhones with Face ID anymore. However, if we ever want to set up our Face ID again, we can do so by clicking on Set Up Face ID on iPhone under Face ID & Passcode settings.
Closure
Coming to an end, this article spoke about the ways a Face ID works. Face ID adds another level of security apart from the default fingerprint and passcode on iPhone. More importantly, it spoke about the ways to set up our Face ID and also how to delete it from our iPhones.
