To add a running head in a word online document simply click on the insert tab and select header. you will need to edit the settings to have a different first page. Add page numbers to the header. You can alternatively, use the APA style template available on the homepage.

A running heading is a short heading comprising about 50 characters or less. It is a requirement in APA style that the running head appears on every page of the paper.
Along with the specified text, the running heading also includes the page number. Here is how you can add a running head to your document using word online.
- To insert a running head in microsoft word online start by opening a new document. This can be done by looging onto officeonline.com
- Once you have a blank document start by clicking on Insert on the ribbon on top of the document.
- From the options available click on Header and footer
- Word online has a provision where you can add a footer using a shortcut
- Fot this all you need to do is hover on the top right of the document
- You will see a header tab sticking out of the document like a sticky note
- Click on the tab to edit the header
Once the header is visible you can start editing it here is what needs to be done

Formatting the header to make it a running head in word online
- Click on option on the right of your screen. You will see a tab just at the point where the header ends.
- From the options available click on Different First Page
- This way the title page of the document will not be ruined.
- You can now start editing the Header
- Start by entering ‘Runner head:’ you can then add the title of your paper
- The title however needs to be 50 characters or less. Shorten long titles to fit this specification. You will need to have the title in all caps.
- You will then need to add a page number to the document. for this hit the Tab key. Two tabs should be enough to reach the far right. Once your cursor is in position insert ‘<#>’
- page numbers can also be added by clicking on Insert and selecting the Page number option
Once the header of the title page is done, you can go to the second page of the document.
- When on the second page you need to repeat the same process as page 1. the only exception is that you start typing the title directly. be sure to type the title in all Caps
- Go on to add a page number as well.
Note: We suggest adding the running head last after you have finished working on the paper.

- To select a template simply click on it
- You will now have a new document that is preformatted open in front of you.
- Follow the instructions and add in the text as required.
- To edit the header open the header by clisking on the header tab
you can then insert the title of the document and the page number.

How do I create a Running head in Word Online?
Running head is required while presenting a paper in the APA format. Here is how you can add a running head on the desktop application of Word.
- Start by opening a new Blank document
- Once the document is open you will need to insert a header. For this click on Insert on the ribbon and select the Header option from the Header and Footer menu.
- The header will appear on the document.
- Under the Header & Footer option select the Different first page option
- you should see a check mark in the box
- Click on the header to start inserting text. Start by typing ‘Runner head:’ you can then add the title of your paper
- The title however needs to be 50 characters or less. Shorten long titles to fit this specification. You will need to have the title in all caps.
- You will then need to add a page number to the document. for this hit the Tab key. Once your cursor is in position insert ‘<#>’
- Page numbers can also be added from the Header & Footer tab
- Select Current Position
Repeat the same process for the second page. The only difference however is that the title of the paper will not have ‘Running head:’ before it on the second page. Once that is done all the pages will be automatically numbered.
